Headway

Headway is the name of a lone-worker monitoring system provided for a major Water Company, concerned about the safety of workers who are either working on their own in remote areas, or visiting clients in hostile environments. The system consists of a number of voice lines, which are used by personnel to book in and out of work. When booking in, they can book in for one of several periods, and can either book in to a specific site, or leave a voice mail message to inform others of their location or activity. Failure to book out again within the appropriate time period results in an alarm being raised on a Regional Telemetry Scheme.

Contact between the Headway system and the Telemetry Scheme is via a dial-up link, or a hard-wired link, with options to use both if one fails.

The system also includes a Human-Machine Interface (HMI), used for monitoring and modifying the system. This can be plugged into the Headway machines locally, or can be used over a network. The network connection has been developed so that the operations room can still check on who is in potential danger if the Telemetry System fails.
